Wow, another defensive shooting

"I can't tell you that you can do that but you do what you have to do to
protect your baby," the dispatcher told her. McKinley was on the phone
with 911 for a total of 21 minutes.

Imagine that.  Common sense.  Do what you need to do.  I totally understand the dispatcher saying they could not actually advise the homeowner to use deadly force.  However, this contrasts very sharply with the dispatcher in my previous post that told the homeowner to disarm.  Also, the homeowner mentions she has two guns.  Good for her.  "Two is one and one is none."

This post also really dovetails into a post by Agirlandhergun where she discussed that women are aggressively prepared to defend their children, but not themselves.

"I wouldn't have done it, but it was my son," McKinley told ABC News
Oklahoma City affiliate KOCO. "It's not an easy decision to make, but
it was either going to be him or my son. And it wasn't going to be my
son. There's nothing more dangerous than a woman with a child."

This sounds like a compelling argument.  It's the old "mama bear" adage.  The problem here is that without mom, that child lives a life without a mother.  That is unacceptable to me.  The only way you can defend your children is to defend yourself.  I do understand the raging-bull defense attitude that comes with children.  Trust me, I do.  I'd rather you just trust me than test it.  However, I also know that providing for my children means coming home to them every day.  I have to protect myself in order to do that.

P.S.
I'm providing separate links since I'm posting this from mobile and I'm not sure they're going to work.

  1. I'm with you, Stephen. With a police response time of 21 minutes, I think she took her only alternative. Luckily, she was prepared and had the option.

  3. Kymber - thank you, dear. Yes, it is happening more and everyone should be prepared. I've been remiss in posting and commenting with holidays, but I'm trying to catch up.

  4. I agree. It is almost getting to be a daily occurrence. And I think that all women should be armed, and trained. Who knows, it might save one of our lives, one day.
I'm working on getting Kathi to take the classes now. I know for a fact, that she can shoot. She scared the c**p out of her ex. And shot rings around him.

  5. I've been following her story and cheer every time I see it, hear it and read about it. YEAH! That's the way it should be. But I am also waiting for it to get turned around and somehow be HER fault.

We live in the country and been having break-ins out here on a weekly basis. They are busting in doors at 5am before people are getting up to get ready for work. It bothers me that I carry outside the house but now I need to carry INSIDE the house too? What's next? Crazy ass people.

  6. Flier - I'm with you. My wife is trained on everything I own.

LB - it would be suicide for the DA to even consider prosecuting that case. Oklahoma also has a Castle Doctrine, so unless there was a complete fabrication of events, I'd say she's in the clear. Still, I hope she has at least consulted an attorney, which you should do regardless of how justified you believe the situation to be. I know where you're coming from on carrying in the house. Myself, I've been doing it for years just because.

  7. My son actually hear Sean Hannity talking on the radio about some liberals in that area are pushing for prosecution because she wasn't legally allowed to have the gun. I didn't hear it, so I don't know if it has legs, but I will be beyond angry if these people go after her.

Your right with or with out children we should have the will to fight for our lives and I am learning how to do just that:)

  8. A girl - there are always going to be a few stupid people and, unfortunately their voice seems to be heard most. The only thing I can imagine is they are confused between legal age to purchase a handgun (21) and legal age to possess a handgun in Oklahoma (18). If she was 18, then I don't know of any other issue other than felony conviction. This would be a moronic battle to fight since they are all but asking for people to be against their anti cause. Heck, even Chicago is smarter than that when they don't charge elderly people that technically break the law to defend themselves. I'm not saying that a person's situation should govern their ability to defend themself, I'm just saying this is a perfect situation to underscore the need to be able to defend yourself that will resonate with a huge portion of the population. If I had an anti agenda, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

  9. I was glad that got the press that it did, and in support of the mother. They were likely after the meds her husband had from his losing battle with cancer. I also do not doubt they would have killed her and her baby if necessary to get them.

  10. Brigid, I have a feeling you're absolutely correct. I'm also happy we don't have to find out what might have happened. Thanks.
