The new "shoulder thing that goes up" quote

Ok, so here it is:

Rep Diana DeGette of Colorado was one of the main forces behind the recent push for gun control laws in Colorado.  She must know a bunch about firearms, since she is so passionate to ban them, right?

Absolutely wrong.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2013/04/03/house-democrat-confuses-her-own-gun-control-proposal/

What's the efficacy of banning these magazine clips?  I will tell you, these are ammunition, they're bullets.  So the people who have those now, they're going to shoot them," DeGette said.  "And so if you ban them in the future, the number of these high-capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time, because the bullets will have been shot and there won't be any more available."
Ok, so that's just ridiculous on the face of it.  She was deservedly laughed at for that piece of brilliance.  Apparently, I need to order a heck of a lot more AR magazines because I was using them all wrong.  I had no idea they were a one-shot deal.

So, her office decided to clarify her obviously ignorant statement.

"She simply misspoke in referring to 'magazines,' when she should have referred to 'clips,' which cannot be reused because they don't have a feeding mechanism," spokeswoman Juliet Johnson said.
 Ohhhhh.

Wait, I still don't get it.  So, now these people are trying to act like they know the difference between a clip and a magazine?  It's laughable.  It would be funny if they weren't actually accomplishing their goal.

I have clips.  Lots of clips.  They have a specific purpose.  You know what else?  They sure can be reloaded if you so desire.  I've re-used my SKS clips many times.  I've also not seen very many "high-capacity clips."  Most hold, what? Eight to ten rounds for a quicker reload of a magazine?

It's a farce.  Is it over?  Not quite.  She also had this little jewel in response to an older individual that had a question regarding his ability to defend himself against a larger and aggressive attacker:

DPD (Denver PD) would be there in minutes.
You'd probably be dead anyway.

Seriously.  Now, whether she realizes it or not.  This was the only correct thing she actually said.  Yes, the police will be there in minutes while you're being attacked.  And yes, you probably will be dead anyway.  She made his point for him as she mocked him.  I think the thing is they really don't care about public safety, they care about the control.  She accidentally exposed herself a little more than she intended.  Sadly, I don't see this being carried very far by "journalists."

Pounding Wet Sand

When we were looking at the house we own right now, I remember looking out the back door when it was being shown to us and thinking how the above-ground pool in the back yard was NOT a selling point.  All I could see was maintenance.  Well, we ended up with it.  It's been ok.  We use it.  I do maintain it.  Mostly.

So, this weekend came the series of unfortunate events leading to the multiple project payload.  You know what I'm talking about.

"Hmmmm, that hose is leaking.  Well, to fix that I have to drain the pool down.  Well, since I'm going to have to do that, I may as well replace the leaky inlet which I've been fighting.  Oh, you know since I'm doing that, I really should replace the sand in the filter."  This is where misery is born.

You see, you're supposed to replace that sand every few years.  Well, it's been a few years since we moved in and the previous owner didn't exactly take care of the pool.  The neighbors have told me stories involving tree-rats doing the bloated back-stroke and Swamp Thing colored water.  I can only imagine what has gone through that filter.

The purchase of the supplies was much less painful than I expected.  Therefore, I left the pool supply store much more optimistic than I had any right to be.  I decided to start early in the morning on the project instead of working in 103F heat.  I'm silly that way.  Still, it was HOT.

The inlet replacement was pretty simple.  Hoses took no time to attach.  I'm cranking along, super-happy with myself.  So, then I took the valve off of the filter and gazed into the abyss.  I would spend the next few hours lounging down there with Faust wanting to go in halvsies on the deal he made just to end this thing.

There is 200 pounds of sand in that filter.  That's dry weight.  This sand is wet.  Very wet.  Let's top that with the fact that there is a PVC pipe that comes all the way to the opening of the filter, which is already small.  I can barely fit my hand through.  I started shoveling with the little plastic cup that I had.  That lasted a very short time.  I've learned some things in life.  Don't ignore the voice telling you when you're doing something stupid.  It's always right.  Also, taking time to find a better solution always beats wasting a lot of time doing something and then trying to find a better solution.

I stopped pretty quick and headed to my parents' house to get their shop-vac.  My thoughts were this:  I would use their old shop-vac and if the vacuuming of sand burned it up, I would get them a brand new one.  Better than buying a new one and finding out the hard way.

Back to the house with the sucker.  Things went quite swimmingly until I got down to where the really wet stuff was.  Sadly, I was just starting to get that loving feeling back.  That's when the sand started actually filling up the hose.  Luckily, I had buckets of water I had collected when I drained the pool.  What's a good idea?  Sucking some of that up to clean the hose.  What's a bad idea?  The one I just had.  An even better idea would have been just wrapping tape on that stupid leaky hose that started all this.

So, now I have a very wet, very sand filled shop vac.  I'm on the 4th or 5th emptying of the thing and it's getting messy.  Oh, and really heavy.  So, the decision has to be made to either empty it a lot or blow a gasket every time I empty it.  I emptied it a lot.  A whole lot.  At this point I can't get the sand out of the bottom of the pool filter.  The pipe goes down and fits to a bunch of spokes that I can't get the hose under.  You know what did fit under it?  My hand.  My now very raw hand.  Scraping a bunch of wet sand into a hose has what I will call an exfoliating affect.

Finished sucking!  Now, haul the new sand to the back of the house.  Fifty pound bags of sand.  I'm reminded of hauling a bunch of cattle feed.  Feel the burn.

So, the project is finally complete.

Stupid hose.

Standing on the shoulders of actual presidents

I'm doing a follow-up post to this post for three reasons.  A. I'm not a fan of dead links, so I didn't want to just change the title and leave that in your reader list,  B. I did some more reading and had more to say, and C.  Because Daddy Gun Blog Black List said so.  :)

So, as was said before our current president can't be more obviously narcissistic.  However, from just reading the original article I had no idea how much so.  I learned two things from the biography section at the White House website.  #1, I'm a bit of a history nut and that section is a time vampire for you history nerds out there and #2 Obama is probably the most self-absorbed person imaginable.  Here is the link and some examples:

I will start your tour with Calvin Coolidge.  At the bottom of this biography is the first of the self-absorption.  It continues for every president going forward to current.  My favorite one has to be here:
President John F. Kennedy famously suggested the American people: "Ask what you can do for your country." In 1961, the Peace Corps was created, facilitating service among citizens working toward peace in developing countries.  In 2011, President Obama celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps with a Presidential Proclamation.
Seriously.  Look at me.  I did...   nothing.

As you read through these you should begin to notice a pattern.  Obama didn't actually do anything to warrant any kind of "look at me" credit.  These are all other presidents' accomplishments to which he is hooking his cart.  Way to define your presidency.  Actually, I think that does a darn good job of doing just that.

Dear Jerk at Wal-Mart:

If you are going to do a transaction involving something semi-dangerous at the cashier, maybe you should get off of your cell phone and pay attention.  Leaving the sweet little older lady to try and handle your dry-ice that you brought up to the register doesn't make me think well of you.  When she burns her fingers on it and you stand there as useful as a bag of man-nipples, it makes me want to shove the cell phone in your mouth and boot you out the door.  When the next person in line (ME) has to help her out with YOUR purchase because she obviously doesn't realize how dangerous this stuff can be and you never stop smacking your pie-hole covers into your phone I have reached a boiling point.  By the way, I had to tend her cold-burned fingers after you left, and yes we talked about you and what a moron you are.  You were plenty old enough to know better and I'm ashamed that you exist anywhere near me.

Karma is holding on line one

You know, sometimes it comes calling.  If you're a jerk long enough and often enough, it's bound to catch up with you.  Don't be that person.  It might just save you from yourself.

Performance Art

That is what I'm calling this.

It's a literal interpretation of what O is attempting to do to small business and those that actually pay taxes in this country.

TOTUS hi-jacked!

I'm sorry, I find this story just full of joke-filled humor.
When you see President Obama speak, there is a pretty typical setup including the presidential seal on a podium, the see-thru Teleprompter and a portable sound system.
Thieves saw the truck carrying that equipment and couldn't resist the target.
So, someone has absconded with TOTUS (Teleprompter of the United States).  I'm not quite sure what that means for POTUS.  Maybe it will give us a reprieve in listening to the drivel since we all know that TOTUS is the puppetmaster.  Or, maybe without a prompter a real agenda will slip out. Or the truth.  Whichever.

NOT smart

Accidental shooting waiting to happen, get yours now!

I can't even remember what I was searching for when I found this.  Lately, I've been wondering if companies even run things by focus groups anymore.  Like the Pomegranate Green Tea I got yesterday.  My first thought (after spitting and gagging) was: "Has anyone ever tasted this before?"  I mean you think you'd have a few people try it first.  Then there is the above little gadget.  Maybe one person in the group like me that would unapologetically say "You're a moron"?  No one?  Anyone?

What will survive the apocalypse?

Cockroaches,

politicians in big bunkers in VA and Washington,

and Porn.
"A spokesman for Van Nuys-based Pink Visual said the bunker will be 'far more than a mere bomb shelter or subterranean survivalist enclave' with amenities such as multiple fully-stocked bars, an enormous performing stage and a sophisticated content production studio."
What a brave new world we will be passing along.

Synthetic Meat

I mean, what in the world isn't appetizing about that?
http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2011/09/01/slaughter-free-stem-cell-meat-sausage-coming-soon/

It reminds me of a great little show we used to watch called Better Off Ted.  That show was just fantastic and this was one of my favorite lines...

That pretty much sums up what I think synthetic meat would taste like.

Twelve felony arrests

But guns are the problem.  Glad to see Mr. Dirtbag didn't make it to a baker's dozen.

There are some interesting parts of this story like the unaccounted bullet holes in the fence.  I'm glad this man could defend his wife and young children.  He can also rest easy with Texas' Castle Doctrine and not have to worry about being sued for doing the right thing.

Guilty pleasure - pot stirring

So, as you know I was sick this weekend and sitting at home bored watching Dirty Harry flicks I really had a lot of time to peruse all of the blogs I follow and make all of my comments.  Then I headed over the the Gun Blog Black List and found a couple of new cool places to follow.  After all of that, I ended up at an anti-gun site linked off of one of Weer'd's (weird punctuation there for possessive) posts.  From there, I found a blog already discussing the IHOP shooting.  I couldn't resist.  The end result is as expected, they can't take it and start flinging insults, so I take that as my cue to exit.  I know, it's a habit I need to break.

Hi, my name is 45er and I'm a pot stirrer.

It really was an interesting discussion and, as usual, exposes their real intention of a full ban on firearms.  If you just really want to see it shoot me a message and I'll send you the link.  I'm not generally one to link antis in my posts.

We know what we're doing

My wife and I were watching the local news the other night and they were joking about the spaghetti model for the storm in the Gulf of Mexico.  At the time, I just laughed and thought how silly it was.  Then I saw the same thing on Failblog today.  It got me thinking.  Some of these environmental and atmospheric scientists are 100% sure that global climate change is man-made.  Then you see something like this and it kind of makes you want to question their scientific theory.

Federal gov says they're just your family

And they're right.  The government is your drunk Uncle Al.  He takes money from your grandma and even lives with her.  He promises with the money that he takes that he's going to improve the place, but he hasn't even secured that back door.  People seem to come and go as they please even though it's against the law and grandma complains about it all of the time.  Heck, now he's even giving them a place to sit and kick it for a while without worrying about getting thrown out when grandma finds out.

Instead, you're pretty sure he's re-distributing granny's money to those poor girls at the club down the street and that adult beverage place on the corner.

Do Not Eat...

...says the dessicant packet in the plastic baggie containing the hardware for the door I just installed.  Also, I'm warned not to ingest the silica dessicant in the bags in my gun safe.  A spark in my pea-brain says, "what kind of world do we live in?"  I guess there are people out there that apparently need this kind of guidance.  Either that, or there are people out there ready to exploit the system for financial gain at every turn.  Or both.  I also guess there are enough people that can sit on a jury and decide that a moron that decided to make a meal out of something that fell out of a bag of screws deserves some kind of financial compensation.  Why would I be nervous if I had to go before a jury of my peers?  Well, society's full abandonment of or degradation of common sense, I guess.

Lemme splain

Hey, moron attorney, what the guy did was a FELONY.  It's called aggravated robbery and I really don't think the court cares what the "take" is.  Along the same lines, I wouldn't really care if I had $1,000 or $1 in my pocket if someone pulled a gun on me.  The reaction would be the same.  I'm not going to try and figure out what kind of weapon is being used.  Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

EDIT:  I'm a moron.  I had this all typed up last night and saw people posting on it this morning.  I thought: "Man I'm glad I typed that up."  Guess who forgot to hit "Publish Post".  Goofball.
